Homework

Primary Homework

Every child has a home reader book to share with their families in Reception and Key Stage 1, or to read aloud at Key Stage 2. If appropriate, the child will also have a task relating to this book or a thinking/talking task to undertake with parents.

  • Reception and Key Stage 1 Home Learning

In addition to their reading book, home learning is sent home every Friday for returning on the following Friday. The home learning varies each week and comprises a piece of work in one of the following areas:

  • consolidation and practice of a skill taught during the week from either Maths, English or Science
  • SEAL/Citizenship – talking about a specific theme or issue, exploring and promoting family relationships, exploring social and emotional skills
  • family – recording events, exploring and promoting relationships

The emphasis is on pupils being able to share a learning activity with their family to encourage engagement and their enjoyment of learning. Many of the tasks are open-ended and can be recorded in lots of different ways such as photographs sent into school, drawings, ticket receipts and leaflets to name a few. This enables both the children and their families to become involved, it promotes communication and social skills and it covers many learning styles and needs. It also enables the pupils to share their finished home learning with their teachers and peers.

  • Key Stage 2 Home Learning

In addition to their reading book, homework is sent home every Friday for returning on the following Monday/Friday. The homework varies from class to class with the main focus being on English and Maths. The work is either a consolidation of the learning that has taken place during week or a pre-learning task in preparation for the learning the following week. Two of our Key Stage 2 classes currently have a class bear that is sent home with a different pupil each week. This enables both the pupils and their families to become involved, it promotes communication and social skills and it covers many learning styles and needs. The pupils love to share their weekend experiences with their peers and teachers.

Secondary Homework

A homework schedule is provided for secondary pupils setting out weekly tasks for different subjects.

In core subjects additional homework may be set to promote progression in key areas of study. In order to assist our learners with their homework, school offers guidance on how tasks should be tackled during Homework Club every Friday lunchtime. Learners who struggle to complete their homework at home attend this session for support.
