Art at Hollinwood Academy is about ensuring every child and young person can join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and recreational activities. Children and young people are engaged and inspired by a challenging curriculum where they gain knowledge about the work of great artists and how art and design reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. These inform their own exploration of themes relevant to their interests and life experiences.

They learn observation through developing skills in recording line, shape, pattern, colour tone, texture, and through photography. They are given opportunities to develop this understanding and to experiment with a variety of mediums and techniques. They will be encouraged to playfully take risks and be open to notice the results. Through this they develop their own visual literacy and self-expression. This creative process can have a positive impact on self-confidence and self-esteem.

 

Art Lessons at Hollinwood Academy

At Hollinwood Academy, our art lessons are delivered with a focus on engaging our children and young people in active learning. The curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum in England, providing our children and young people with a strong foundation in art knowledge and skills.

Throughout the academic year, our children and young people participate in one art lesson per week. The art scheme is designed to ensure effective progression, with units divided into four core areas that are repeated in each year group. This approach provides teachers with greater clarity over knowledge and skills progression within the four areas. It also allows teachers to feel confident that children and young people are given opportunities to develop mastery by revisiting core subject knowledge and applying that knowledge practically in a range of contexts with growing complexity.

The four core areas of our art scheme are:

1. Drawing: Through drawing, children and young people learn to observe and represent the world around them. They acquire skills in line, tone, shading, and composition, allowing them to express themselves visually.
2. Painting and mixed media: Children and young people explore the different properties and techniques of various painting mediums, such as watercolours, acrylics, and oils. They also learn to experiment with mixed media, incorporating different materials into their artwork.
3. Sculpture and 3D: In this area, children  and young people develop an understanding of three-dimensional space and form. They explore sculpting techniques using materials such as clay, wire, and found objects.
4. Craft and design: This area focuses on developing children and young people’s skills in craft and design, including activities such as textiles, printmaking, and digital design. Children and young people learn to apply their creativity and technical skills to produce functional and aesthetically pleasing artwork.

The units within our art scheme are designed to ensure that children and young people experience the fundamentals of art through broad and balanced units. They include exploration of the work of a wide range of artists and makers. These units guide children and young people in the skills required to explore, analyse, and discuss art. Children and young people are encouraged to combine their knowledge of what constitutes 'art', specific artists and techniques, with their own experiences to evaluate artworks and inform their own creative practices.

By following our comprehensive art curriculum, children and young people at Hollinwood Academy can develop their artistic abilities while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world of art. Our aim is to nurture their creativity, encourage critical thinking, and provide them with a strong foundation in art education.

 

Schemes of Work

At Hollinwood Academy, we believe in providing a comprehensive and engaging Art and Design curriculum for our children and young people, following the guidelines laid out in the 2014 National Curriculum in England. To achieve this, we have adopted the Art Kapow scheme of work, which allows us to deliver high-quality lessons that foster creativity and individual expression.

Our Art and Design scheme of work is designed to be flexible, allowing our staff to adapt the planning to suit their specific needs and incorporate cross-curricular links. This flexibility ensures that our children and young people have a diverse learning experience while also meeting the requirements of the national curriculum.

One of the key strengths of the Art Kapow scheme is its emphasis on promoting autonomy among our children and young people. We firmly believe in empowering children and young people to develop their creativity through experimentation and individual responses. The scheme provides a range of units with flexible options, enabling us to make links with other topics and encouraging more innovative and creative outcomes.

By using the Art Kapow scheme, we are able to offer our children and young people a varied and stimulating curriculum that encompasses a wide range of artistic skills and techniques. Our lessons are carefully planned to allow for exploration of different art forms, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Not only do these activities develop specific artistic skills, but they also enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-expression abilities.

Our scheme of learning promotes an inclusive environment where children and young people of all abilities can engage with and excel in Art. We provide appropriate support and adaptations to ensure that every child and young person is able to access and participate in the curriculum effectively.

Communication Art Curriculum

In our communication groups, art is taught as a cross-curricular approach with a strong focus on communication. We carefully select suitable topics based on the curriculum stage of each child and young person, as well as the specific topic being covered. During our Attention Autism sessions, teachers introduce key art concepts and vocabulary to enhance engagement and learning.

Under the engagement model, we have found that 'Attention Autism' is a highly effective method to promote independence and facilitate overall development. By utilising these alternative approaches, we believe that all children and young people can achieve their full potential. Our dedicated and committed staff in these classes ensure that this becomes a reality.

The children and young people are taught a range of skills including engagement, responsiveness, exploration, perseverance, initiative, anticipation, and communication. By fostering these abilities, we aim to empower our students and instil a genuine love for learning.

Overall, our Art Curriculum adopts a holistic approach to science education, integrating communication skills and alternative teaching methods to create an enriching and inclusive learning environment.

Curriculum Adaptations and Pedagogy

Assessment 

At Hollinwood Academy, we employ a comprehensive approach to assessing every child and young person’s progress in art. Our assessments are designed to align with the 2014 National Curriculum in England and are based on the Kapow schemes of work. Art lessons at Hollinwood Academy are a chance for children to discuss, question, and evaluate. Evidence of this is captured on Evidence for Learning during by the child or teacher.

The art curriculum is designed to actively involve children in evaluation, dialogue, and decision-making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make. By participating in our regular discussions and decision-making processes, children not only acquire factual knowledge and key information about art but also develop the ability to confidently articulate their own learning journeys, possess higher metacognitive skills, and nurture a growing understanding of how to improve.

For children and young people who are working below the National Curriculum standards, we employ pre-key stage standards to assess their performance. Additionally, children and young people who are working even below pre-key stage standards are assessed using the Engagement model of learning, which considers their individual learning needs.

To provide individualised support, each child and young person has bespoke and personalised art progress targets, which we closely track. We believe in fostering a strong partnership with parents; hence, we share these targets with them on a termly basis via Arbor, our digital communication platform.

Art Competition - The Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show

Hollinwood Academy's will be participating in The Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show, thanks to the efforts of our art teacher, Mrs Whalley. This prestigious competition offers children and young adults aged 4-19 an incredible opportunity to showcase their artwork at The Royal Academy of Arts, both online and onsite.

With the chance to exhibit their creativity in such a renowned institution, our students are eager to unveil their masterpieces to a wider audience. Mrs Whalley has nurtured their artistic abilities, providing guidance and inspiration throughout the creative journey.

The Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show is a chance for our students to celebrate their achievements and gain recognition for their hard work.

We firmly believe in the power of technology to enhance learning, and we have made it an integral part of our art curriculum. At the primary stage, we embrace the use of iPads and other technological tools, enabling all children and young people to engage actively with their learning. By utilising these resources, we aim to remove barriers and make science accessible for every child and young person.
