Blog 09.09.2022

Welcome to the academic year of 2022/23. I really hope you’ve all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer break and it has been lovely speaking to the children and young people about what they have been doing over the summer.

As we look forward to the year ahead I have been busy finalising key documents with the senior leadership team and the governors. Part of this process is analysing the achievements that all of our children and young people achieved over the last academic year and the results are amazing.

At KS2 we had eight students that met national standard or were within 10% of meeting the national standard for the KS2 SATs. We are extremely proud of the efforts of all the students that took the KS2 SATs, their behaviour and resilience during the assessments was exemplary.

Over the summer, students across the country have celebrated their first post-pandemic GCSE results after sitting their exams before schools broke up for summer. Their achievements follow two years like no other with repeated lockdowns and countless other challenges caused by COVID. However, we want to congratulate all of our year 11 students and are extremely proud of all their work, achievements and outcomes especially after such a difficult and disrupted two years. The students have shown passion, commitment and resilience in their studies throughout their time here at Hollinwood Academy and it has been great to see lots of smiling faces on results day as students secure the grades that they worked so hard for.

Students worthy of special mention are Ethan, who was our highest performing student based on progress from his KS2 SATs. Alex, Gian, Leon and Michael all met their GSCE expected targets based on KS2 SATs. Aiden who improved by nine grades, Sam improved by 5 grades, and Leo improved by 7 grades across all their subjects since their mock exams. Caitlin improved by 2 whole grades from her mock exam in maths. Grace improved by two whole grades in both maths and geography from her mock exams. Chloe who achieved, a grade 3, four grade 5’s, a grade 6, two grade 7’s and a level 2 with distinction; achieving an impressive array of qualifications. The national average for achieving grade 4 and above was 72.6% in Food technology, Hollinwood Academy achieved 75%, which is an outstanding achievement!

In addition to their GCSEs, both Grace and Alex achieved Silver Award in Duke of Edinburgh.

Thank you to all staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure all students are able to progress onto their next steps, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.

As a school, we love to hear about our past students. We would like to congratulate Thomas on his outstanding A-Level results. Thomas achieved A* in Mathematics, Philosophy and Extended Project and a grade A in Biology. He is now off to Manchester University to study Philosophy. We are immensely proud of the journey that Thomas has taken since leaving Hollinwood Academy, good luck on your adventures at University!

From our older students to our new Reception children who have done amazingly well coming to their new school. I’m pleased to say we have had lots of happy, smiling faces and also new students who have joined us this week and it has been a pleasure seeing you settle into your new school. The start of a school year is always an exciting time and I remember as a child loving the start of a year in a new class. I looked forward to every new exercise book or piece of equipment. It was fantastic. As a teacher, I similarly used to relish getting to know a new set of students and the simple process of handing out exercise books and labelling them was joyful. Of course, for most of us, the new year is an opportunity to build upon the successes of last school year. For some of us, we start afresh, with a blank page – an opportunity to move on and to approach our learning with a fresh enthusiasm and vigour. I can’t wait for the year ahead.

Now to our ‘Commitment to Learning Stars’:

Commitment to Learning Stars

As you can see we have had a number of building developments over the summer. We have had a new reception area built along with Mrs Duffy’s new cooking room. We are in the process of finalising a new staff planning and preparation room and the builders a busy working on the two-classroom extension at the front of school. Unfortunately, the portacabin has been delayed that will be at the front of school and this will now be installed over the October half term. Our school business manager, Mrs Tushingham, has worked tirelessly over the summer holidays to make sure all the building work and alterations are on track.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.
