Blog 06.05.2022

Eid Mubarak to all our children, young people, families and staff who celebrated this week – I hope you had a fabulous time celebrating with your family and friends.

It has been a short, but eventful week, at Hollinwood Academy. Let’s start by seeing what some of the classes have been doing starting with Miss Tootill’s class…

“A fantastic end to another busy week for our class. Last week, we had an eventful day at the farm which filled us with lots of fun, facts about animals, and an opportunity to embrace being outside promoting positive mental health.

Bank Holiday Monday provided us the opportunity to rest, recharge and prepare our class ahead of our upcoming year 6 SATs next week! We have used disciplinary literacy and decoding skills to help us identify what the questions require and how to answer them. We are eager to allow our children to showcase their knowledge and demonstrate how what they have learned at Hollinwood Academy has influenced their educational journey.

On Tuesday, we welcomed the Oldham Mental Health team to discuss with our year 6 children transition prior to September and discussed how to deal with change.

In PE we enjoyed participating in fun games with Miss Sutcliffe, Miss Simms, and Miss Connett, next week we welcome back Mr. Lawrence and Active8, as we take on goalball.

On Thursday with Mrs. Bennet, we went to Daisy Nook Café and then off to the park during our Outdoor Ed lesson. After a short walk and exploring nature, we talked about being safe outdoors and how to promote a positive mindset.

We hope you have a great weekend and we aim to aim to have a fantastic rest of the academic year! On behalf of Miss Sutcliffe and myself, we have had a pleasure teaching our class this year and wish our year 6 children all the best ahead of their transition into secondary school.

Now to Mrs Bone’s form…

English

We are currently reading “The curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”. This book is about an autistic boy named Christopher who sets out on a journey to uncover who killed his neighbour’s dog. While reading the book students were able to share their opinions and reflect on their own characteristics, engage in conversation about autism and how each and every person who has autism differs from others. This book allowed students to understand what life with autism looked like for Christopher.

Maths

This term in maths we have been learning and exploring enlargements and similarity. They gained a greater understanding of how they can enlarge various shapes into different sizes by using a centre of enlargement and a scale factor. They completed an end-of-block assessment where they scored some of their highest scores yet!

Science

In science this term we have been so far exploring how sedimentary rocks are formed, looking at the different layers and then completing a practical to make their own example of sedimentary rocks.”

Now to our ‘Commitment to Learning Stars’:

Commitment to Learning Stars

Kathryn Lyons, who is our new EHCP and attendance officer, will be starting on Monday 9th May. Many families will already know Kathryn as she was previously an EHCP officer at the local authority and is extremely knowledgeable about EHCP review processes and procedures. She is very excited to be joining our team and we are looking forward to her starting.

Next week, our year 6 children sit their SATs and I am extremely proud of the effort being made by all our year 6 children as they prepare for their SATs and I would like to thank you for the support you are giving your child.
