Holiday Club trip to Alton Towers

Blog 29.04.2022

Welcome back after the Easter break and I hope you are all ready for the Summer term ahead, I know we are.

As I walked around school, to welcome everybody back, I called into Mrs Potts’ form to hand out a Head Teacher’s Award to Hayden as he was absent from school on the last day of term.

Well done Hayden – keep up the hard work.

The summer term is always a busy term but even more so this year as for the past two years both SATs and GCSEs were cancelled for our year 2, 6 and our KS4 students but this year these have been reintroduced. Our year 2 children will sit their SATs across May and our year 6 children will sit their SATs on Monday 9th May – Thursday 12th May. Year 1 children will also carry out the phonics screening test and year 4 children their multiplication test. Then we move on to our KS4 students who will be sitting their GCSEs starting on Tuesday 17th May, Biology GCSE and finishing on Thursday 23rd June, Physics GCSE. Attendance for all our children and young people during these times is crucial and the right support is in place for our students.

Mrs Bennett was exceptionally impressed with some of our primary children this week as Lynz Smith, Customer Experience Manager and David from Sainsbury’s in Oldham invited all primary children to take part in an Easter egg colouring competition and they selected three lucky winners. 1st prize was awarded to Alex in Miss Woodhead’s class, 2nd prize was awarded to George in Miss Prescott’s class and 3rd prize was awarded to Harrison in Miss Lerigo’s class. I think you will agree from the smiles on their faces that they were really happy and super excited to receive their Easter eggs and cuddly toys. Well done to all the children who took part in the competition, your colourings were absolutely amazing and were displayed in the foyer at Sainsbury’s for everyone to see.

Thank you also to Lynz and David for bringing the community and our children together to collaborate and work together for the celebration of Easter.

Let’s see what some of the classes have been doing starting with Miss Simms’ class…

“Welcome back! I hope you have had a lovely Easter break. It was great to all get back together again on Monday to kickstart our final term as primary students!!

We have been looking at ratio this week in maths and have been using cubes to help us understand how to write a ratio and understand ratio as fractions.

In Science, we have started our new “Living Things and their Habitats” topic. This week, we learnt about classification and had a go at classifying sweets! Delicious!

We started our “Trading” topic this week in geography and learned about which foods were imported in to the UK. We used food packages to locate on a world map where our food comes from!

On Thursday, we spent the day at the farm. We stroked and fed the animals, toasted marshmallows, explored the forest and played in the gigantic park! Well done year 6 – you were fantastic role models and represented Hollinwood Academy brilliantly!”

Now to Miss Meadow’s form…

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our first week back and have been busy during outdoor ed, science and art this week. In Art, we have met Mrs George and completed some sensory master pieces, she was very impressed with how hard we worked! We enjoyed our art lesson and look forward to our next ones.

We completed our first science experiment of the term, we practiced using a microscope looking at different floccules and everyone understood the importance of being careful with the equipment. The teacher was very impressed with how independently the students handled the equipment and were safe in the lab.

Miss Meadows and Mrs Millard got an impressive email while the students were on outdoor education this week from a member of the public and her dog Mable. Lindsay phoned reception to pass on compliments to our class on their excellent behaviour this week:

This was the email Mrs Millard received:

A member of the public (Lindsay) phoned to pass on some compliments. Lindsay was walking her dog in Daisy Nook and passed Miss Meadow’s class on outdoor education. Lindsay said that the students were all very well behaved. She said that Alex even helped to walk her dog (after permission granted from the teacher). Lindsay also learnt a new fact about eye colours from Alex.

Lindsay said a big thanks to all and a special thanks to Alex for making her day! 😊

We are very proud of all the students and how independent they are becoming when accessing the community, well done everyone!

Liam, Alfie, Summer and Alex have all received commitment to learning certificates for their outstanding efforts in their learning. The first star of the week this term was Liam for having a positive attitude all week, earning all his ticks and being determined to complete all tasks given by staff. We have had an excellent first week back and we are proud of the students.”

This week students within key stage 2 had the opportunity to visit the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT) which is based at the beautiful Booth Bank Farm, a 17th Century farmhouse set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.

All of the students were very excited about our school trip and they travelled by coach and school mini bus.

When they arrived at CAFT they were greeted by the amazing, friendly and enthusiastic staff team and split into different groups.

They then moved around the beautiful 10 acre site and had the opportunity to experience hand feeding the animals, visited the forest school and played on the adventure playground.

As you can see from the amazing photos below they had a magical time.

Mr Heap would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team at CAFT for making it such a special day for Hollinwood Academy.

If you would like to visit their website, it is – The Childrens’ Adventure Farm Trust (caft.co.uk).

Mr Heap will be visiting again on 12th May with our reception and KS1 classes.

Now to our ‘Commitment to Learning Stars’:

Commitment to Learning Stars

Can I just remind our families about the updated guidance for managing COVID-19 in schools. The Government’s ‘Living with COVID-19’ approach to testing came into effect on 1st April 2022. This marks the end of the broad availability of testing for the general public. Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education setting. The updated advice to follow:

• Children with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or mild cough, who are otherwise well, can continue to attend their education or childcare setting.

• Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and where possible avoid contact with other people. They can go back to education or childcare setting when they no longer have a high temperature and they are well enough.

• If a child or young person has a positive COVID-19 test result they should try to stay at home and where possible avoid contact with other people for 3 days after the day, they took the test. The risk of passing the infection on to others is much lower after 3 days, if they feel well and do not have a high temperature. Thank you for your support in helping to keep our school safe.

School is closed on Monday 2nd May as it is Bank Holiday so I hope you have a lovely long weekend and I’d like to finish my blog by wishing all our children, young people and families Eid Mubarak on Monday and Tuesday next week. I hope you have a fabulous time celebrating with your friends and family.
