Holiday Club trip to Alton Towers

Half term already!

I can’t believe we are at October half term already but it has been a great half term and it has been so nice seeing all the children and young people settled, happy and working.

Each half term, I present a number of Head Teacher’s Awards out to well deserving children and young people that have been nominated by the staffing teams. The following children and young people have been awarded a certificate this half term and I am so proud of them…

Well done and keep up the hard work next half term everyone!!

Let’s see what some of the classes have been doing, starting with Mr Rawson’s class…

“This week the class have been completing end of term assessments in Maths and English and have worked really hard. We have also been continuing with reading ‘Mr Stink’ by David Walliams and enhancing our reading skills.

The class have been using the Skills Builder programme and are currently working on teamwork which has provoked some interesting debate in the group.

As part of our Science for this term the class have been studying Everything Changes and this week the class have designed and drawn their own creatures which have adaptations to live in harsh environments.

As part of the upcoming Halloween festival the class have been carving and designing pumpkins as well as eating some Halloween treats!

Outdoor Ed this week was spent hunting for conkers in Chadderton Hall Park, Mr Flanagan has the record for finding 54 conkers, well done………

A special mention to Brodey Thomas who has had an exceptional term, he has worked really hard in his lessons, and kept a clean bill of behaviour!

Well done, Brodey.”

Now to Miss McMurray’s form…

Pupils in Art Options have been studying sea life, after their trip to the Sea Life Centre earlier in the term. This week, they have been completing jelly fish doodle art, using a fine line pen.  What fantastic budding artists we have.

Police Visit

We had a visit this week in form time from two local Police Officers.  They had a chat with 10NMY with regards to staying safe and being respectful in and out of school.

Over the half term pupils have been planning and designing their websites. This week, pupils put their final touches to their visualisation diagrams and have started to create their websites using Serif Webplus, we can’t wait to see the final results.

Basketball Tournament

Some pupils from 10NMY and other members of Hollinwood Academy participated in a basketball tournament with a range of local schools.

Our cheerleaders Miss Bartlett, Miss Wharfe, Miss Stubbs and Miss Hayes are very proud of our young people who represented Hollinwood Academy in the tournament.  They came an amazing 4th place and showed great team spirit.  Well done to the basketballers!

Duke of Edinburgh

The students have been to Hartshead Pike this week for this DofE trip. They enjoyed exploring and seeing the lovely views from the top of the Pike. The students enjoyed

their walk.

In English this term the students have been learning about the play ‘Inspector Calls’. The students have a great understanding of the play and this has taught the children about social class and our responsibilities as citizens to look out for everyone.

E-Safe Award

A huge congratulations to pupils in classes 7SCG and 7SPS for completing and passing their E-Safe Awards.  Pupils have completed a series of E-Safety lessons during ICT and have shown they are respectable and responsible users of technology.

Well done, everyone!”

Now to our ‘Commitment to Learning Stars’:

Commitment to Learning Stars

As the first half term finishes it is also the time of year where we say good bye to some of our teaching staff as they move onto to new and exciting adventures.

Mrs Lomax will be leaving us in December as she has accepted a new role as an EHCP officer with the Tameside SEND team, this is an exciting opportunity and we wish her every success.

Mrs Lomax has worked at Hollinwood Academy as a primary teacher and lead practitioner for Humanities and Living skills since we opened our doors in 2015. She has made a valuable contribution to the learning and development of the children and the school and will be missed.

I am sure you will join me and the rest of the staff, Governors and Trustees of Hollinwood Academy and the New Bridge Group in wishing Mrs Lomax well as she begins her new role.

We finish for October half term today and school is running our holiday club for those families who have requested this. I hope you all have a fabulous half term. I know my girls are very excited to celebrate Halloween. They have their outfits sorted already and keep changing their minds about their hair and make-up!

School will reopen on Monday 1st November 2021.

Have a lovely October half term.
