Firstly, I hope you have had an enjoyable summer break and are looking forward to the new academic year ahead?
I know I certainly am, and the teachers and staffing teams have been busy over the summer getting their classrooms ready for this academic year. We are all excited that life in school will begin to feel normal again.
I would like to say a warm welcome to our new families that have joined Hollinwood Academy this week and it has been lovely speaking to some of you in the mornings and afternoons. I hope that this year will be a much more settled year and it is wonderful that we are all back in school together.
The Primary students are settling into their new classrooms and have enjoyed meeting new teachers, staff and friends. Our Secondary students have finally got the opportunity to move from class to class for subject specific lessons as they follow their timetables. This has been a new experience for the new year 7 and our year 8 students, but they have taken it all in their stride.
It has been lovely to see all of our children and young people mixing again at break and dinner time and not having to stick to their bubbles or designated areas. This said, control measures and a new risk assessment are in place to keep everyone as safe as possible.
As we have welcomed a number of new students across the school, we have also welcomed new staff to Hollinwood Academy and I would like to introduce these staff:
Jessica Pettigrew joins our teaching staff in our KS1 classroom. We interviewed Miss Pettigrew in the summer term and she excelled herself in communication and autism strategies. You could also see her caring and nurturing side within the interview, which we have seen all week in the classroom.
Gaynor Duffy joins our Secondary teaching staff as our Food Technology teacher. We also interviewed Mrs Duffy in the summer term and she brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and charisma to the food technology lessons, as well as an excellent background of working with students with ASC. Her enthusiasm for supporting learners was evident in her interview and she is passionate about her subject specialism which has been lovely to see in class.
We have also appointed a number of new teaching assistants across the school:
Kelly Kulczycki joins our specialist learning environment.
Georgia Cook joins Miss Pettigrew in Year 1.
Zoe Barker joins Miss Parkinson in KS2.
Beverley Worrall joins Miss Marston in KS1.
Connor Hibbert joins Miss Simms in Year 6.
Adam Blaizer joins Mrs Cowling in Year 7.
Niamh Lyons joins Mrs Cowling in Year 7.
Charlotte Appleby joins Miss Daniels in Year 8.
Michael Mason-Bamford joins Miss Bones in Year 9.
Shirley Gledhill joins Miss Rudge in Year 11.
Karen Lyon joins Miss McMurray in Year 11.
Rebecca Carrington joins Miss Fletcher in KS4.
Our new students and staff have had a great first week and we can’t wait for the year ahead.
We will return to our class blogs and SUPER STARs and SEALs over the next coming weeks, once the students have settled into their new classes.
QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE
To enable everyone to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, the late May Bank Holiday (originally 30th May 2022) has been moved to Thursday 2nd June 2022, with an additional Bank Holiday on Friday 3rd June.
The Department for Education have reduced the minimum number of sessions schools are required to meet in the academic year 2021/22 to allow for the additional bank holiday. As the additional bank holiday falls in the May half term, the finish date at the end of the Autumn term has been amended so Hollinwood Academy will now be closed on Friday 17th December 2021 for the start of the Christmas Holidays. The last day of the Autumn term will be Thursday 16th December 2021.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I am going to Chester races on Saturday with my husband and eight of our friends. I hope the weather stays dry and between us we pick some winning races. I have left the race choices to my husband while I have concentrated on my outfit, accessories and hair piece for the day.
