Holiday Club trip to Alton Towers

What a week! We have supported the national annual anti-bullying week. As with everything being very different at the moment we took our campaign online and students and staff haven’t disappointed.

When these photos from our primary team dropped in my inbox I couldn’t help but smile so I wanted to share their amazing work. Students looked at what it means to be unique and designed their own pair of odd socks, I feel we may have some future fashion designers on our hands…

From our secondary team, staff and students got involved and shared photos of their odd socks on national odd socks day, it’s so lovely seeing the students engage well when learning from home.

On Thursday Hollinwood Academy took part in their termly Super Learning Day. Students in both secondary and primary joined in with the learning which was focused on Spiritual Development.

This term, our Super Learning Day looked a little different but this has not stopped the teachers from being creative to ensure that the students enjoyed the day.

The aim of the day was to explore relationships and how different religions support relationships through stories, festivals and ceremonies. Due to Covid-19 the emphasis was on giving our students the opportunity to explore and share their feelings about how our relationships have been affected by lockdowns and how significant events and celebrations have been affected.

The students have explored how we have adapted to lockdown and ways we have still kept in contact with friends and family. They have discussed how local communities have come together to support each other and the vulnerable. The students have discussed how their lives have been affected and how significant events in their lives have been impacted on.

Throughout the students have learned how different religious celebrations and events have been celebrated during lockdown and how these have supported people’s feelings and emotions. They have also enjoyed trying out some relaxation and calming techniques to help them cope when things have not gone to plan.

Let’s take a look at what the classes and forms have been doing during Super Learning Day…

  • In Miss Shin, Miss Marston, Miss Parkinson and Mr Corrigan’s class…

Miss Parkinson’s group enjoyed playing parachute games and working together to help others have fun. Mr Corrigan’s group had a mindful arts and crafts session and practised sharing their equipment and working alongside others. Miss Shin’s group enjoyed a music session and focused on taking turns, sharing and making new friends. For spiritual development, Miss Marston’s group used relaxation and massage to get to know the other children from our bubble. The children were very calm and enjoyed using the sensory den we had set up.

We were really impressed with how all of the children managed change and transitions around the school, and how they worked together so nicely.

  • Mrs Halkyard’s class…

We acted out some scenarios to show how our behaviour affects others. We looked at different religious ceremonies and how these have changed because of COVID and how our relationships with others have changed due to COVID.  We then looked at Diwali – what it is, how it is being celebrated this year, learnt a dance and made some lanterns.

  • Miss McDonald’s class…

For super learning day, we explored the story of Diwali and looked at new beginnings and changes. We looked at how things have changed in 2020 and how celebrations have changed because of the pandemic. We also learnt some fun Diwali dances.

We explored Buddhism and looked at meditation techniques that Buddhists use; we linked this to how people have used mindfulness and exercise to cope during COVID. 

Lastly, we looked at friendships and self-evaluation; we explored the impact of how our friends feel when we are unkind. We took part in a role play activity where the children were ‘angry’ we explored how this made other children feel and looked at alternative strategies we could use to calm down when we feel angry.   

  • Miss Simms’ class..

For super learning day we took part in different “anti-bullying” activities. We learnt what bullying is, what it looks like and how it might make people feel. We also discussed what we would do if we saw this happening or if it happened to us. The class were extremely mature during this discussion and created some wonderful “anti-bullying” slideshows to show off what they had learnt. It is clear that we have some very kind children in our class! We then had a go at playing some group games in the playground to practise our teamwork and friendship skills. 

The class learnt about Diwali to explore new beginnings and change. We also learnt about Buddihism and looked at mindfulness and meditation techniques. We took part in chair yoga and mindfulness colouring at the end of the day to help us reflect on our day.

  • Mr Rawson’s class..

Today we focused on how COVID-19 has affected our daily lives and the class did some worksheets and discussed how lockdown has affected them.

  • Miss Collinge’s class

Our class focused on friendship for super learning day and have worked hard to show how we are good friends. We have made friendship bracelets, played together and made a friendship tree from our hand prints. We have also made friendship hugs which we will send to each other’s home. Then everyone can have a hug from a friend to use whenever they need it.

  • Mrs Woodhead’s class..

For SLD we talked about special people and special places. We looked at festivals which bring our families and people who are special to us together such as Eid, Diwali and Christmas and why these were special. We created a special people-special places tree using our hands and feet. The tree representing our families and the hands bringing everyone together.

  • Miss Tootill and Mrs Lomax’s class…

For super learning day this year Miss Tootill and Mrs Lomax’s class merged to develop their understanding of relationships. Throughout the afternoon, we explored our relationship with others via different activities and working within small groups with Miss Tootill, Mrs Davies, Miss Sutcliffe and Miss Jones.

Collectively we discussed our present knowledge of relationships and we talked about different terminology surrounding relationships. Our main focus of the afternoon was working together in small groups, to develop 4 different areas of relationships.  Each group explored how relationships can be recognised through religion and marriage: friendships; positive and negative friendships and how to recognise these and finally, discussing different types of relations and diversity.

 We concluded our learning by collectively coming together and discussing what we had learned throughout the afternoon and by appreciating relationships and how they impact on our lives.

Super learning day is a school focus day, as part of the national curriculum we need to learn about different beliefs, cultures and traditions from around the world. This helps us learn to stay connected to the world and the people around us. Within this SLD we focused on relationships which I think is very fitting as we continue to live through a global pandemic. Students enjoyed the afternoon’s sessions and were encouraged to discuss how Covid-19 affecting people’s lives. How did we help ourselves and others during Covid-19 and finally how have relationships changed. Our class discussed how communities came together, how we all helped others and we created some kind message posters! Our class would also like to say thanks to all our staff that are continuing to make school a safe place, to all our parents and families for your continued support and finally thanks to all our key workers and communities for working hard and staying together.

This afternoon for super learning day we worked together to focus on relationships and how the coronavirus pandemic may have affected these for people in the UK and all across the world.

The class worked together to discuss how communities came together to support one another, how people have been impacted by the pandemic and how celebrations may have differed this year due to the circumstances.

Finally, the class created their very own ‘thank you’ poster and embedded quotes of kindness into it. They have done this to show their appreciation for key workers who have dedicated their time and lives to helping us through this difficult time.

  • Mr Stewart’s form..

Made positive message posters and crafted some flowers with positive messages on for the display outside the class.

Thank you to Mrs Lomax for coordinating the super learning day. As you can see, the students had a fantastic day.

  • Miss Shin’s STAR this week is Cody for working hard and following instructions.

  • Miss Marston’s STAR this week is Arissa for playing nicely with her friends and working hard on her phonics words. She’s memorised all the phonics songs and loves singing them for everyone to hear.

  • Mr Corrigan’s STAR this week is Brooke for making great progress with her listening this week.

  • Mr Corrigan’s SEAL Superstar is Caitlin for working extremely hard on her turn taking this week and making excellent progress.

  • Mr Corrigan’s WOW moment wen to Victory for having a brilliant day. Well done!

  • Mrs Halkyard’s STAR of the week is Marco for contributing well to lessons all week.
  • Mrs Halkyard’s SEAL Superstar is Marley for recognising other people’s strengths.
  • Miss McDonald’s STAR of the week is Zakariya for being a superstar all week. He has used wonderful manners and has tried super hard with his phonics all week.
  • Miss McDonald’s SEAL Superstar is Sofia for identifying differences between herself and her friends and for identifying strength in herself and her friends.
  • Miss McDonald’s DOJO winner is Haoy. Well done!

  • Miss Simms’ STAR of the week is Alfie for being a great friend and creating a super Anti-bullying video.

  • Miss Simms’ SEAL Superstar is Essah for recognising that he is good at playing games with other children.

  • Miss Tootill’s STAR of the week is Thomas P for settling back into school and being calm.

  • Miss Tootill’s SEAL Superstar is Carlo for accepting his friends strengths and accepting their differences.

  • Miss Tootill’s Dojo winners is Byron. Well done!

  • Miss Collinge’s STAR’s of the week is Lenni for being a really good friend on super learning day.

  • Mrs Lomax’s STAR of the week is Lewis for talking about his feelings and engaging with all his lessons and learning.

  • Mrs Lomax’s SEAL Superstar is Zachy for noticing other people’s emotions and checking in with them to make sure they feel okay.

  • Mrs Lomax’s Dojo winner is Harrison. Well done!

As you know, we have had two secondary bubbles self-isolating and we can’t wait for them to return on Monday. While the students have been self-isolating, there has been some outstanding learning taking place at home.

  • Ms Rashid – “Well done for opening your iPad Brad! I am so proud to see that you are engaging with your online learning. I have been monitoring your progress and so far, you seem to be submitting most of the lessons which is great to see. Keep going!”
  • Ms Rashid – “Well done Caitlin, you have approached your online learning with a very positive and mature attitude. I am very proud of you for self-assessing you work and communicating with staff the subjects you would like to focus on to progress further. Keep up the good work!”
  • Ms Rashid – “Outstanding work as always Chloe! Your attitude to learning is fabulous, your work is always completed to a high standard and is also always submitted on time. Continue to make us proud!”
  • Mr Philips – “I nominate Chloe who has mastered some advanced spreadsheet skills online. She seems a very determined young lady!”
  • Miss Rudge Bobby and Lucas produced some beautiful work for super learning day and Melissa is working hard on a ‘composition’ project in Art. Their work is beautiful and I am so proud!”

Well done to everyone that has been nominated and has received a certificate! We are so proud of you as we know it is extremely difficult and challenging when self-isolating.
