Holiday Club trip to Alton Towers

Welcome back to the final half term in school.

As Mrs Millard mentioned in her last blog, I have returned back to work after being on MAT leave. The one thing that shocked me was how much all the pupils have grown. It has been wonderful walking around the school chatting to all the pupils and meeting the pupils who joined Hollinwood in September.

This week has been a very busy week for many of the pupils but more so for our Key Stage 4 pupils who have been sitting their GCSEs. Mrs Butler comes and lets us know how the pupils have got on after each of the exams and she has been so impressed and proud at how hard they have worked, they have been a credit to themselves and should be proud of how much effort they have put in to them. I have also been impressed with the way in which they have conducted themselves, all have matured and grown up a lot this year.

Over the week, I have had lots of walks around the school and it has been wonderful to see that even with the large numbers that we now have, the behaviour of all pupils has been fantastic. It has been great to hear from the staff how well our pupils have been able self-regulate, taking themselves into calm spaces, going to talk to the pastoral team or even getting their boxing gloves on and going off to use the punch bags.

This week it’s the turn of Miss Grimsley to tell us what learning her class have been up to..

We have had a very busy first week back, our topic this term is ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and so we have been learning about animals that live in the sea. The children have had lots of fun doing different sensory activities that allow them to explore their learning. The children especially enjoyed exploring sea creatures during water play and trying to catch the fish in their nets..

We also learnt about things that we would find on the beach, they loved playing in the sand making sand castles and exploring shells.

The children have also been learning about under the sea through Attention Autism and have enjoyed watching and taking part in making their own starfish..

We have been working on turn taking during phase 3 of Attention Autism, the children have had so much fun taking turns jumping on the trampoline and exercise ball. All the children tried super hard to sit patiently while waiting for their turn and when their turn was over they all was able to return to their seat with minimal support. They were even able to refocus their attention back on the activity! Amazing work we are so proud of them all, keep it up!

Now lets see what Miss Meadows’ class have been up to..

This week we have worked hard to learn about how different emotions may look, we have written postcards about our escape plans with beautiful descriptions, made models of the moon phases and had a brilliant debate with our peer mentees and mentors.

We started the week by discussing what emotions we may feel when things change, we are beginning to think about transition and these emotions that ourselves and others may be feeling in school. We recorded some emotion words such as ‘anxious’ and ‘excited’. We then discussed what these would look like visually and had a practice, this was great fun.

We moved on to start our new topic in English which was Kensuke’s Kingdom, which is a novel about Michael, he gets washed up on a Desert Island and has to survive. We discussed our own survival plans and used some impressive arguments to rank them from important to least important. We used some brilliant words like ‘infinite’ to describe our resources. We then got to use a new app on the iPad called ‘PhotoCard’ to write postcards to describe our rescue mission. We hope you enjoy reading our lovely work..

Lastly, we made models of the moon phases as part during our learning during Science. We had great fun recreating the moon phases over time and understanding the technical language that this topic introduced.

Miss Meadows runs the peer mentoring group which happens every week. This Monday we discussed which items to take to a Desert Island and this created a lot of fun, stimulating conversation. These mentors and mentees are doing very well in their peer mentoring roles and are also supporting others within school. They are making a big difference.

We have been going to swimming lessons all year to improve our technique and ensure we are safe in the water. We have also been sharing Mrs Moss’ journey this term. Mrs Stubbs normally supports our swimming lessons, but Mrs Moss has been having lessons too with our brilliant swimming teachers! This week she swam independently on her own and achieved a full length! Everyone at Hollinwood is so proud of her achievements, she has even been swimming with our class too! Well done Mrs Moss, keep practising..

National Smile Month

As you may be aware from the letter you have already received, it is National Smile month until next Thursday. Next week many of the classes will be looking at the importance of brushing your teeth so Mrs Lomax has asked that you provide your child with a toothbrush and paste that can be used in school during the week. Mrs Lomax will be able to send us an update on how this goes next week.

You also may have read that we are losing one of our dedicated teachers – Mrs Dunsdon. Mrs Dunsdon has worked at Hollinwood Acadmey since we opened in 2015 and has played an intregal role in the way we have shaped Hollinwood into the school it is. Even though Mrs Dunsdon will be missed, I am sure you will all join us in wishing Mrs Dunsdon all the best in the next stage in her career.

Finally, I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
