Holiday Club trip to Alton Towers

I cannot believe we are finishing for the May half term already! This half term is always a short half term but it has been extremely busy. I’d like to start my blog this week with my Head Teacher’s Awards given out this half term..

I must start by praising our Year 10 and Year 11 cohort this week. It’s been a challenging week but you’ve all worked so hard. Well done. They have had three GCSE exams and they were certainly intense, however, they have yet again done me proud and tried their best. Keep revising over the half term and then two weeks after we return back to school on the 3rd June they will all be finished!

I must also mention and say a big well done to some of our Year 2 students for doing an amazing job in their Key Stage 1 SATs which they completed this week. They got the chance to shine and put into practice everything they have learned in Key Stage 1 as they edge nearer towards starting Key Stage 2 this September. They really have done themselves proud with the effort they put in.

Today, Miss Collinge’s class held a cake sale and car wash to raise money for Cancer Research. They worked incredibly hard and made a fantastic total of £180 – WOW!!!! All of the students made, decorated and sold the cakes and worked as a team to clean cars for members of staff. They even managed to wash the car of a visitor, who was very pleased and a little surprised! The whole class have worked collaboratively to plan, organise, advertise and host this event as part of their enterprise. Initially they wanted to raise funds for their class – games, books, lego etc. but having discussed this as a group, they realised that they were already lucky and fortunate enough so decided to give all the money raised to Cancer Research. This again proves to me that we have the best students at Hollinwood Academy, they are so caring and considerate. The event today could not have gone ahead without the help, support and guidance from Miss Collinge, Miss Sutcliffe and Miss Senior; as I observed from my office I could see all the students and staff having a wonderful time! Thank you Miss Collinge and your fabulous class. I am sure Cancer Research will be extremely grateful for your donations.

Some months back, I shared Kim Lipinski-Burgess fundraising story with families. Kim’s son has Autism and every year for Autism Awareness Week, 1st – 7th April, she carries out fundraising events. This year, she wanted to give back to her local community and chose Hollinwood Academy to do this. During the Easter holidays, Kim contacted me to say that she had raised an amazing £340 for Hollinwood Academy to buy books for our students. As we returned back from the Easter holidays Kim got in contact with me to see what books we would like for our students. I worked with Miss Shin (Primary English Lead) and Mrs Nuttall (Secondary English Lead) to pick relevant books for our students and these arrived on Monday. Kim came to school on Friday to drop our new books off and she got to meet some of our students, Miss Shin, Mrs Nuttall and myself.

After Kim’s visit I received a lovely e-mail from her:

I just wanted to say it was a pleasure to meet everyone today, especially your wonderful students. I hope they enjoy their books and sand art kits and I hope you all have a fabulous week off. Many thanks, Kim

Reece, who is pictured above, wanted me to send a message to Kim and it was too lovely not to share with our families..

Kim’s books are outstanding, absolutely amazing! There are: Colouring Books , Learning Books , Reading Books. It’s brilliant how Key Stage 1/2/3/4 get to learn with these amazing books. I really like Every Single Book and you should be Proud of yourself Kim. Thank you so much Kim from Hollinwood Academy.

We are so thankful for Kim and the community spirit that this brought. I would just like to personally thank Kim for her generosity and the students at Hollinwood Academy will love reading these.

As I have mentioned before, the Secondary students are now earning points and receiving rewards for their positive behaviour, attitude and engagement within lessons. Miss Bones rewarded the winning forms with a reward film and breakfast this monirng. This half term’s winners were Miss Meadows and Mr Hartley’s classes. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had plenty to eat! Mrs Nuttall’s class were helpers and did an amazing job. Well done everyone!

Thank you to Miss Bones for coordinating this, the students are really enjoying their rewards and a healthy competition at the end of every half term.

I have to share with you our Key Stage 1 and 2 DISCO that takes place on a Thursday and Friday dinner time and is hosted by our very own DJ Stone. The students have been treated to a brand new bubble machine from DJ Stone and loved expressing themselves through dance and movement! Thank you DJ Stone.

As I was handing out my Head Teacher certificates today, I came into Mrs Lomax and Miss Parkinson’s assembly and their topic of conversation was extremely interesting..

The discussions that the students had during their assembly were lovely to hear and be part of. Well done Mrs Lomax and Miss Parkinson’s classes.

Mrs Dunsdon’s class would like to share with you their learning…

As usual EYFS have had another busy half term and have been doing lots of brilliant learning. Our theme has been ‘I can see a rainbow’ and so we have been learning about the things that make our world all colourful and beautiful. We have been growing sunflowers which are now getting quite big. We enjoyed planting the seeds and we all got really excited when they started to grow.

We have been exploring Vincent Van Gogh’s painting of Sunflowers and have done some lovely art work showing our own interpretations of this famous piece of art.

We have been learning about life-cycles and in particular those about frogs and butterflies. We have done some beautiful work for this area of learning.

We have continued to do some great yoga and Katie our yoga teacher has been really impressed with the progress of our children and so are we.

We have also been getting really physical in PE using the gymnastic equipment as well as our Zumba lessons and our children are enjoying dances with a blast back to the 80’s.

The children have all continued to work really hard in Maths and have been exploring 3D shapes and comparing numbers. We have been using lots of resources to support this learning and all of our children are making great progress.

It’s hard to believe that we have managed to fit so much into five weeks but the children work so hard and rise to every challenge. We are so proud of them all. Have a safe and happy holidays and see you all when we come back.

Mr Francos’ class would like to share with you their learning too..

It is the last week of the Summer half term but ADS have been as busy as ever. In I.C.T. the class have been practising their animation skills by moving real objects in front of images of different backgrounds..

In Spanish , we read the fairytale of Rapunzel together and the students did a great job of translating key words..

In Swimming, the group have been learning to play water polo – not easy to control the ball and move about in the water at the same time! A special mention goes out for Joshua, who is making lots of effort with his swimming and making great progress.

In Music the class were learning about different chords and how to play them on a keyboard. I wonder if we have any budding Elton Johns in ADS!

In P.E. the class worked using lots of different skills as they were circuit training, which is great for fitness and good fun as well.

Best wishes to all parents and we hope you all have a great half term break! Kind regards from Miss Johnson and Mr Francos.

From our student Super Stars to my Staff Super Star, Miss Byrne. It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Miss Byrne will be leaving us on Friday 14th June. Miss Byrne has worked at Hollinwood Academy since we opened in September 2015 and has worked for the MAT since 2008. We are very sad to be losing Miss Byrne’s skills and dedication to her job, her patience and caring attitude will be greatly missed. Whilst it is very sad that we are losing Miss Byrne’s talents, I am sure you will join me and the rest of the staff, Governors and Trustees across the New Bridge MAT in wishing her well in the future and hoping that she enjoys her new role in the world of nursing.

From resignations to new recruits for September 2019. Myself and Miss Gordon have been busy interviewing teachers and I am excited to tell families that we have appointed 6 new teachers. I am delighted to tell you that Mrs Woodhead and Miss Collinge have both accepted permanent positions at Hollinwood Academy along with Miss Simms, Miss Tootill, Miss McDonald and Miss Fletcher. They have all accepted their new teacher posts and are looking forward to meeting their new classes.

It now gives me great pleasure to inform families that Mrs Walton returned to work this week. She has found the lovely little Ollie a nursery so she can return to work after her maternity leave. It has been lovely having Mrs Walton back in school and I know the students and staff have missed her. I will be working closely with Mrs Walton from now until the end of Summer to provide a transitional period to bring her back up to speed with all the developments that have happened during her maternity so she can start the new academic year as she means to go on.

We finished for half term today and school will reopen on Monday 3rd June. I hope you all have a lovely week off.
