Weekly Blog

Stories and information about our School. Click here to view the blog.

Well, we have nearly reached the end of the school year – I can’t believe how quickly it has gone and how much the pupils have achieved in that time.

This week we got the Year 6 SATs results back for the pupils who sat them. I must say that all the staff who have worked with the three boys over the last couple of years are so proud of how well they have done.

Also this week, Aaron and Nathan accompanied by Mr Wilkes from Hollinwood completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s qualification with a 3 day quailfying expedition which you can read all about here. Aaron and Nathan have both now finished their educational journey at Hollinwood and they are off to new destinations – we wish them success and hope they will let us know how they get on.

This week, the majority of our Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils went on a rewards trip to Ashton Bowl – here is what Miss McMurray has to say about the day..

On 12th July, 41 pupils from Key Stage 3 and 4 attended a trip to celebrate their fantastic behaviour and attendance. In the morning the pupils went to the cinema to watch Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. After the film, the pupils then went for lunch and had a game of bowling. The behaviour of the pupils on the trip was amazing and the staff were very proud of how they conducted themselves – well done, everyone!

Mrs Lomax wanted to share with you all some wonderful work that the pupils in her class have been doing at home with their families..

For the Summer term our topic has been ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ In this topic we have been learning about the solar system and why Earth is special. This included us looking at plants and life on Earth (life cycles). We have also been trying to find out what plants need to grow and how will a plant grow in space.

Rather than weekly home learning, this term we sent home a project! We wanted the children to plant a beanstalk and record how it does in the form of a diary. We provided a plant pot, compost and a bean! We suggested that the diary could be daily or weekly and it could be recorded in words, drawing, photographs or video. The response has been fantastic! We have had photograph diaries, a cork display board showing the bean diary and written reports..

The children have found the whole topic brilliant and the support from parents for the project has been phenomenal – thank you!!

Now over to Miss Shin’s class..

We have loved our ‘To infinity and beyond!’ topic. We have been learning all about the race to space between the USA and the USSR – we have learned all about different significant astronauts that went to space, including a dog called Laika! We had a debate about animal astronauts and concluded that we think animals should NOT be sent to space..

In Science we have also learnt all about space – we have learned about the size and order of the planets..

..how they move in the solar system..

..and also used Oreos to demonstrate our learning about the phases of the moon..

In Maths we have been learning all about symmetry..

It has been so sunny that we have also taken our learning outside!

We have loved reading the Iron Man in English and are currently making our own movie trailers having finished reading the book!

This week we have had a special visit from the Problem Solving Company thanks to our work this year with the North West 2 Maths Hub. You can read all about our exciting problem solving day here but Mr Heap particularly wanted to share the pictures of his class – as you can see, they had a fantastic time working together to tackle all the different challenges..
