Welcome to the start of another school year!

We are now in our third year of operation and the school has grown substantially since we first opened. We have welcomed many new pupils into school, from reception all the way to Key Stage 4 and it has been nice to see how happy they are to return to school, although inevitably we have had some tears with our youngest pupils.

Along with all the new pupils we have also welcomed lots of new staff which has helped to grow the team and the provision we offer at Hollinwood. Miss Meadows, Miss Sanderson and Miss Daniels have joined the secondary teaching team and we have ensured that our pupils in primary and secondary are supported with additional apprentice teaching assistants.

Even though it has just been our first week back, Mr Rawson and Mrs Lomax wanted to share a little of what they have been up to..

Our Key Stage 2 Nurture class has welcomed three new members, Olivia, Finley and Donte and welcomed back Daley and Lucas. All the pupils have had a good break and have settled back quite well in to school routine. We have started work this week on our new book ‘Gangsta Granny’ which is proving very popular but taking a little longer to read as the pupils (and staff) laugh at some of the quotes! Our Living Skills has started with Healthy Eating and Healthy Living this week.

The pupils have met their new subject teachers in Drama, ICT and Art and enjoyed a great PE session yesterday with Mr Downhill, one of the Manchester City staff. Today we are having a Maths lesson, doing some more Living Skills and some Science before Soft Play this afternoon and some free time to catch up on work or do some Arts and Crafts.

In Mrs Lomax’s class the pupils have been reading ‘The Tiger who came for Tea’ and have been creating masks and re-enacting the story..

Miss Rudge’s Key Stage 4 Art students have hit the ground running this week and created some really impressive work!

Our first lesson saw us engage in a baseline sketch assessment and the results were amazing! Pupils were looking at the idea of line, shape and form. We have some beautifully talented artists at Hollinwood Academy and Miss Rudge couldn’t be more proud. We have also made a great start on our Observational Art task too – what a great first week! Pictured is Olivia’s work..

Let’s end with our Stars of the Week:

  • Mrs Dunsdon’s class: Jake who has done some fantastic work in Maths
  • Miss Grimsley’s class: Mia for fantastic singing in class
  • Mr Corrigan’s class: Harrison and Nathan who are two of our new pupils for settling in really well and making friends
  • Mrs Lomax’s class: Macro for settling into class well
  • Miss Louden’s class: Lewis for having outstanding behaviour all week and Callum and Jack for settling in to the new class well
  • Miss Parkinson’s class: Gabriella for settling into school well
  • Mr Heap’s class: Daniel who has settled well into school
  • Miss Shin’s class: Alfie who has settled back into school life really well and has worked very hard on all his work

Our SEAL stars will start from next week. This week’s blog is not very long but from next week we will be featuring a secondary class and primary class who will share what they have been working on.

Please could I remind parents about finishing times for school. Secondary children finish at 3.30pm. Primary classes will be brought out by staff from 3.10pm onwards as they finish at 3.15pm. If you need to pick your child up earlier, please could you speak to me.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
