We’ve had another very busy week at Hollinwood! It was lovely to welcome so many families to Parents’ Evening on Tuesday and we hope you were able to attend. If you didn’t get chance to fill in our short questionnaire on the day, you can still give us your feedback here.

On Wednesday we had some visitors in school who had come to moderate the work that Mrs Dunsdon and the Reception team do. They looked through the children’s files to see the progress they had made during the year. I am delighted to say that the moderators were very pleased with what they saw which showed how well Mrs Dunsdon and the team know our pupils and their individual needs.

Myself and the Pastoral Team with the help of Ms Soltyk, our admin manager, have been busy finalising details of the transitions that will be taking place for the new children joining Hollinwood in September. As many of you are aware, the school has places for 140 pupils from 4–19 years, and you won’t be surprised to hear that we are full for September and have a waiting list.

This week I asked Mr Corrigan and Miss Rudge to share with you all what their classes have been up to.

Let’s start with Mr Corrigan, who has decided to tell you what the children have been learning with pictures..

For the Creative Curriculum and English we have been using our Creative Curriculum role play work on carnivores and herbivores to inform our non-fiction writing in English..

This term’s Maths topic is Money. This week we have been looking at colours, coin/note recognition and ordering, making amounts and word problems..

Let’s see what Miss Rudge’s class have been up to..

In assembly we discussed the school rules and some changes to our lunch times which will now see our pupils given the option of various fun activities to choose from. These include Art Club, ICT, board games and sports games and activities outside on the MUGA. We also discussed standards and expectations, including wearing the correct uniform and having the right equipment at all times..

We also returned to our gardening project from our last blog entry. We initially looked at the idea of nurturing others to allow them to grow..

..and just look at our plants now!!!! 

We have been watering our plants daily and looking after them ever so well. We have learned that a little love and care for something or someone else can go a long way.

The class have been using ICT in Maths as a way of guiding learners through some tricky times tables tasks. The class love the numeracy apps and often ask to ‘play’ on these during form time (a teacher’s dream!!)..

 

Our Drama lesson this week saw us look in a little more detail at Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (Miss Rudge’s favourite!) We tried our hand at at some script work and although we found the Shakespearean language a little strange at times, we modernised the words to make better sense of the text…who knew ‘Lysander’ and ‘Demetrius’ were from Oldham, Ay? 

We ended the session with a relaxation exercise..

Learners were guided through a series of breathing exercises and ended with a visualisation exercise. We were all very sleepy and relaxed afterwards!

  SEAL Superstar: Thomas for learning how to say ‘no’ to people without hurting their feelings
• Mrs Lomax’s class:
  Star of the Week: Joshua for doing some fantastic coin work in Maths
  SEAL Superstar: Nimra for showing a good understanding of what might hurt others
• Miss Louden’s class:
  Star of the Week: Alivia for working hard
  SEAL Superstar: Lewis for showing a good understanding of what might hurt his friends
• Miss Parkinson’s class:
  Star of the Week: Luke for super effort in all his lessons this week
  SEAL Superstar: Luca for great effort in joining in and recognising healing and hurtful behaviours
• Mr Heap’s class:
  Star of the Week: Finlay for trying really hard all week in class with his work and behaviour and Ellie for being brave and talking about her worries
  SEAL Superstar: Aaron for speaking about hurting others and how to be kind
• Mrs Halkyard’s class:
  SEAL Superstar: Caitlin for showing good understanding of feelings of hurt, how it makes you feel and the impact of hurting others
